My husband, Dwight, is really good at asking me hard questions. The questions I need to be asked because I won’t ask them myself. January was a busy month for me. The second week I decided I wanted to make a new sewing project each week in 2015. Now when I get hooked on an idea I really get hooked. I dove in head first and next thing you know I’m staying up until midnight and working late on Friday nights – typically date nights for us.
After dinner the other night he looked at me and asked, “What do you want to have learned by the end of the year? Do you want to know how to sew patterns (which is not a bad thing if that’s really my goal) or do you want to be closer to designing clothes yourself? Is your blog becoming something you use to impress people or a way for you to process what you are learning?” I couldn’t ignore his questions. They were good and I needed to answer them. I realized I don’t want to finish the year only having sewn a lot of different patterns – that’s not my ultimate goal. I also realized sewing a different project each week isn’t great for my marriage. With a full-time job and Dwight being in grad school with a part-time job, every extra moment we have is precious to us and those extra moments were getting fewer and fewer with each project.
So after mulling over these questions I’ve decided to change my routine up a bit. My new goals are to finish two sewing projects a month and on off weeks practice specific techniques over and over again until I do them correctly (i.e. sewing zippers, darts, inserting sleeves, etc.), learn to sketch figures and garments, study the basics of sewing/design, and never give up. My schedule won’t be as strict the weeks I am not sewing full garments, leaving me with extra time to rest and reconnect with Dwight.
I want this blog to be a space where I process what I’m learning, a place where I’m real about the ups and downs of learning something new and chasing my dreams. I want you to feel welcome here and just maybe from time to time you will find some encouragement and inspiration.

What are your goals this month? Any advice on incorporating sewing into an already busy schedule?
Have a lovely weekend!
You two are amazing! Great post, good ideas, my advice, enjoy sewing! When it becomes hectic or you feel pressure, that’s not fun! Keep it simple, fun, and think…learning in process!
